The iridescent jewel tone kernels of glass gem are breathtaking! Glass Gem corn is stunning heirloom corn variety created and stabilized by Carl White Eagle Barnes. Carl was passionate and instrumental in supporting many Indigenous nations with recovering, reconnecting and stabilizing their ancestral seeds. It is a honour to continue growing and connecting others with this very special corn.
The study corn plants produce several 5 - 7" corn ears. Corn is wind pollinated. To increase pollination it's beneficial to plant corn in a block as opposed to single rows.
In the kitchen, glass gem corn can be used for popping or making meal and flour.
Here at Nested we direct sow our corn once the soil has warmed up (is at least 16 C).
